Sabian Symbols - 360 Songs of Spirit

The New Symbols

The original Sabian Symbols were received in 1925 through the collaboration of astrologer Marc Edmund Jones and clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler. These 360 symbolic images, one for each degree of the zodiac, have inspired astrologers, philosophers, and spiritual seekers for generations.

My teacher, Linda Ruth, devoted more than fifty years to studying these symbols, not simply as astrological descriptions, but as living spiritual realities. Through decades of chart work, contemplation, and direct observation, she discovered that the deeper meaning of each symbol often extended beyond its original wording.

Linda teaches that symbols precede ideas. Before language, before concepts, before our attempts to explain reality, there is symbol. Like music, myth, or alchemy, symbols speak directly to the soul. They reveal truths that cannot always be captured through literal thought.

As her understanding deepened, Linda recognized that while the original Sabian Symbols remained profoundly meaningful, the language of many no longer fully expressed the living realities they revealed in practice. Encouraged by author William Horden, she began the careful work of rearticulating the symbol, not to replace them, but to give fresh expression to their enduring essence.

For example, the original Sabian Symbol for 5° Cancer is "An automobile wrecked by a train." Over years of observation and experience, Linda came to understand this image as describing the relationship between the individual and the greater collective, and the ways our personal lives are shaped by larger forces. Her revised symbol became:

"The protective crown absorbs the vibration of every jewel."

The underlying principle remains the same, yet the image speaks through a symbolic language that more readily invites contemporary understanding.

These revised symbols are not intended to supersede the original Sabian Symbols. Rather, they continue an ongoing conversation between heaven and earth a recognition that while eternal truths remain unchanged, our relationship with those truths continues to deepen. As human consciousness evolves, so too does our capacity to perceive and articulate the wisdom contained within these symbolic images.

In this view, the zodiac is far more than a collection of astrological degrees. It is a living field of intelligence, a sacred language expressed through 360 symbolic gateways. Each symbol invites us into a deeper participation with life, revealing patterns of meaning that connect the soul with the unfolding mystery of existence.

As philosopher Paul Brunton wrote:

"A symbol is a message from the higher self to the personal self."

The revised symbols are offered in that spirit: as invitations to deeper understanding, greater participation in life's mystery, and a more symbolic way of living.
